Books are linear. We read them from cover to cover, in which we indulge ourselves in the narrative exactly as the author has devised. A book, after all, is unknown territory until the author leads you by the hand, revealing essential elements at the author’s whim.

I’ve written a novel about a young Chinese restaurant owner whose business is about to get demolished by a gargantuan development company. In order to relate to the true story, the reader must understand underlying tendencies, Chinese traditions and cultural schisms. I’m bridging all these necessary elements in a natural form. My book is layered, like an onion: at the centre lies the novel; and around it, in coherent contextual layers, I wrote articles which are in my opinion necessary to understand the Chinese culture and events in my novel.

The reader is free to skip to the novel, or cherrypick articles. I encourage the reader to explore the Fish Castle.

The book is available from Blurb for €21,50.

Four years of Interactive/Media/Design have nearly come round. That means that the first cycle has been completed: the last air bubbles have been purged from the engine; all rotors and mechanical elements have now all been oiled and should no longer stall or sound squeaky; the perpetual motion of students progressing through a new educational institute has been established.

It also means that I/M/D students will soon flow steadily into the world, ready to achieve dreams as a full-fledged creator. I refrain from using the word ‘designer’, because it simply doesn’t cover the load. People of the most various skill sets have been put together to understand the purpose of creation, and how to bend materials to their will, as to create something from nothing, and by doing so, contributing to their world in whichever way they consider important. To be able to look back and to say, “I made that,” and be proud of that achievement.

However, as of current, we cannot really look back and say, “I made that,” unless we’ve been exceedingly good documenters, which, due to our chaotic nature of being creators, we are not. The reason we cannot look back and point at our previous achievements lies simply in the reason that there was no structural environment for us to leave our traces behind. This is an acceptable mistake: when you first lay the roots of an entirely revolutionary course, the last thing you consider is keeping track of everything.

After four years of I/M/D I have recognised this issue and find it no longer acceptable, and have therefore a proposition for such a tool. This tool is a website which should cast some clarity on our achievements at I/M/D as a group and as individuals. It helps us to look back and remember that we made that, and that we are proud of that achievement. And that we have progressed from that point where we made that, which brings us to what we are today, and will be tomorrow.

I have included a sketch of my proposition (click here). Please look into it with an open mind. And please let me know if you are interested in making this tool work. It’s based on my concept for business perspectives.

I have forwarded this email to all tutors whose emails I have, and some students whom I think might be interested in helping me out; but this is an open letter and freely accessible to everyone. As such, please feel free to forward this to your students as I don’t have everyone’s email.
All the best,

David

A dramatization of what really happened to me. I was in the library for weeks to finish a project. By the end of the day I usually grew really hungry and took some cookies with me. But before I had even removed the crinkly wrapper, the library nazi already busted me. How did he even know I was eating?
